Pic boasts a geniune soundtrack of old and new tunes, including a long jam session that taps the talents of blues stories Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sulmin. Regrettably, the unconvincing imaginary story Rosenbaum weaves for this solid musical base hits every meller cliche within the "self-destructive rock star" playbook. Even Peter Fonda, typecast being an over-the-hill road manager, rings true only occasionally. Opening August. 5 in Gotham, pic's lame dialogue, callow thesping and absurdly foreseeable plot make extended play unlikely. Inside a wraparound device, aging rocker Spyder (Kevin Zegers) is questioned with a reporter (Lukas Haas) prior to the film flashes to the 1980s and Spyder's tension-filled go back to his home town and former best friend Eric (Jason Ritter), whose tunes he stole for his megahit first album. Eric demands Spyder, Spyder's bandmates and sexy agent (Taryn Manning) join him and '60s relic Fonda on the folkloric trip lower Route 66 to restore their spark.
